Why does 5'-O-DMT-thymidine have no base protecting group?

Thymine has no reactive exocyclic amine, so unlike A, C, and G it needs no base protection. Only the 5'-hydroxyl is protected with the acid-labile DMT group, which is removed at the start of each oligonucleotide chain-elongation cycle.
